Libby Mercer for organizing this fantastic blog hop. I'm so excited to be writing about the sensational secondary characters in my debut novel, Finding Lucas.
My novel centers on Jamie Ross, a 32 year old television producer at one of the sleaziest talk shows in daytime television. On her fifth anniversary with her boyfriend, Derek, a former bad boy turned maniacal metrosexual, she knows that he's not the man for her. Everyone knows! But Jamie-- insecure, reserved and terrified of change-- can't see a way out of her dysfunctional and depressing relationship. But when her new boss, Andrew, comes up with a segment on reuniting lost loves, she remembers Lucas--her "friend with benefits" from ten years earlier. She goes on a hilarious and desperate hunt to find him while at the same time, discovers that she is worth so much more than the life she's been living.
And Jamie wouldn't be the funny, quirky and intriguing character she is without the cast of supporting characters by her side. Jamie's family is unique, unpredictable and full of love and laughter. Her mother, Leah, the colonic herbalist and crystal healer, has no problem asking about Jamie's bowel habits when her boyfriend is over for dinner; her stepmother, Leah's girlfriend, Katie, masseuse extraordinaire, reveals the most intimate details of her sex life with a big smile and Jamie's eighteen year old sister, Rachel--bouncy, beautiful and the total opposite of Jamie-- never fail to embarrass her. The banter and antics of my secondary characters are often what my readers comment on the most.
Everyone who reads my book has a very strong reaction to Derek. A total bastard, he puts Jamie and her family down every chance he gets, cares only about owning the latest of every trend and has a mother no girlfriend ever wants to meet. I based Derek's not so nice qualities on some of the men my friends and I have known. And to be completely honest, some of his more OCD habits mirror my own.
It is Jamie's small group of close friends who are her constant support. Hanna, the gorgeous lingerie store owner, is tough and protective; Lucy, her zany co-worker, encourages Jamie to listen to the universe and find Lucas and her chirpy roommate Amy, who sometimes gets way too close for comfort, has a most shocking occupation.
Finding Lucas wouldn't be the same without antagonist Eva, Jamie's colleague and nemesis. She follows Jamie's every move to find anything that will incriminate her and makes it her mission to make Jamie's life sheer hell. And, of course, there is sweet, gentle Andrew: Jamie's boss, new friend and someone who gets her for exactly who she is.
Through the entire novel, readers get tidbits of who Lucas is and why Jamie so desperately wants to find him. He was her best friend, first real sexual experience and in Jamie's mind, totally the one who got away. But is he really?
Truly an ensemble cast of characters, their relationships and interactions are what makes Finding Lucas "such a fun novel to read," as many of my wonderful readers have said. I had such a good time creating all of them, and Finding Lucas would not be the same story without them.
